English as an Adventure
Imagine your child spending a whole week swimming like a mermaid, creating underwater worlds, listening to stories about the ocean depths – all while speaking English the entire time. That's exactly what our English and Mermaiding theme week looks like as part of Threshold's summer English camps.
This isn't a classic language course. It's a week where English stops being a school subject and becomes a natural part of the adventure.
What Is Mermaiding, and Why Do We Combine It With English?
Mermaiding is a sport where children swim with monofins, moving like mermaids or seahorses. It's a physical activity that builds coordination, strength and confidence in the water – and above all, it's incredible fun.
Why do we pair it with English? Because children learn a language best when they're fully immersed in a topic that excites them. When a child is swimming, creating an underwater diary, or playing the role of a sea creature, English comes naturally – without memorising vocabulary lists and without stress.
Threshold instructors run the entire programme in English: instructions, stories, games, discussions and everyday communication. Children barely notice they're learning.
What Does a Typical Day at Camp Look Like?
Each day has its own rhythm, but it's never boring. The programme combines movement, creativity and language so that children stay active, happy and immersed in English all day long.
- Morning warm-up and welcome in English – the day begins with movement, straight away in a foreign language
- Themed activities and projects – creating underwater maps, stories, costumes or underwater worlds
- Mermaiding in the pool – swimming with monofins under the guidance of an experienced instructor
- Language games and challenges – English woven into competitions, quizzes and group tasks
- Afternoon creative block – painting, prop-making, story dramatisation
The programme is designed to suit each child's age and language level. Instructors adapt the pace and difficulty of the English to each group.
Who Is the Camp For?
The English and Mermaiding theme week is suitable for children roughly aged 6–12. No prior knowledge of English or swimming experience with monofins is required – children learn everything they need right on site.
The camp is ideal for children who:
- love water and swimming
- enjoy creating, playing and moving around
- want to improve their English but find classic courses boring
- are looking for a meaningful and enjoyable way to spend their summer holidays
Where and When Does the Camp Take Place?
Threshold's summer English camps take place in Prague 5, in surroundings that children know well and where they feel safe. Mermaiding takes place in a pool with a certified instructor, while other activities are held on the camp premises.
The camp is organised as a day camp – children arrive each morning and return home in the afternoon. This gives parents peace of mind knowing their children are close by, while also allowing them to enjoy their own free time.
