Who the courses are for

Choose the type of teaching to suit your child's needs

Not every child benefits from the same course. Some children start English at after-school clubs, others need a smaller group, an individual pace or online learning from home. The overview below will help you explore the options and choose the format that will suit your child best.

Courses at ZŠ V Remízku

English courses for pupils in years 1–3 take place after school, during the school club hours, right at ZŠ V Remízku. This is often a child's first encounter with English, where they learn basic vocabulary, songs and simple phrases.

MINI groups

English courses for years 3–7. Teaching takes place in small groups of 3–6 pupils, follows a set timetable and focuses on expanding vocabulary, simple sentences, questions, short dialogues and above all greater confidence in speaking.

Online learning

Courses for children who prefer an online environment, like learning from home or need more flexibility. Teaching can take place individually, in pairs or in groups of three. Pair and trio lessons are opened for participants who book together in advance.

Individual lessons

The ideal option for pupils who need to improve a specific skill, have a personal language goal or want to study a less common language. Teaching can take place in person at our school or online.

Pair and trio lessons

Closed lessons for two or three students — for example siblings, friends or pupils with the same goal. Suitable for exam preparation, school support or regular conversation. Teaching can take place in person or online; participants form their own group and sign up together.

English in partnership with primary schools

Teaching takes place directly at primary schools within standard language lessons. This supplements regular English teaching, where our international teachers collaborate with school staff, focus primarily on communication in English and motivate pupils to engage more in the foreign language.

How kids English courses work

Courses for kids and older pupils (teens) are designed to match each age group.

Pre-school learners use flash cards, modern audio & video, building blocks, memory games, toys and English workbooks for the youngest.

For every level we use modern textbooks selected by our methodologist and supplemented by custom materials.

Teacher selection is critical — beyond teaching ability, our kids' teachers need the right personal traits to inspire young learners.

Semester: 16–18 weeks (September–January, February–June). Group size: standard 4–10, MINI group 3–6.

English for pupils and teens — with Czech teachers or native speakers

We offer group classes for primary school pupils (both stages), including older year groups facing high-school entrance exams. We also run group lessons for high-school students.

Certificates earned during studies are valued — many students use them to waive the maturita English exam.

Course content varies by age, level and students' needs — conversation, skills beyond the school curriculum, plus grammar revision and vocabulary expansion.

We pick varied activities to keep participants engaged and motivated to keep learning languages.

Frequently asked questions

Goals and outcomes

What is the main goal of children's language teaching?

We want children to understand English, feel confident using it and gradually develop a positive relationship with the language. For younger children, enjoyment, security and natural contact with the language are important. For older children, we gradually add more targeted work with school, exams or specific skills.

How will I know my child is making progress?

In children, progress is not only shown by knowing more vocabulary. What matters is that they understand better, respond faster, are less afraid to speak and can use the language in simple situations. For older children, progress can also be tracked through school results, tests or preparation for a specific exam.

What if my child doesn't enjoy English?

First it's worth finding out why. Sometimes the course is too difficult, sometimes too slow, the child feels shy or has had a bad experience at school. We can help you assess whether a different group, a different type of teaching or individual support would be more suitable.

Choosing a course

I'm not sure whether a group or private lessons are better for my child. What do you recommend?

If you want regular lessons, working in a group and long-term guidance, a group is often suitable. If the child needs an individual pace, catching up on material, preparation for a specific exam or more flexible times, private lessons are usually better. We're happy to help you choose based on your child's age, level and goals.

Can a child combine group lessons and private teaching?

Yes, in some cases this makes sense. Group lessons can serve as a regular foundation and private teaching as targeted support, for example before an exam, when catching up on material or when faster progress is needed.

What is the difference between individual, pair and trio lessons?

Individual lessons are 1-to-1 with the teacher and offer the most scope for personal pace and a specific goal. Pair or trio lessons are suitable for children or students of a similar level with a similar goal, for example siblings, friends or classmates. The advantage is a lower cost per participant and the opportunity to communicate in a small group.

Who are group English courses suitable for?

Group courses are suitable for children who benefit from regular lessons in a smaller group and contact with peers. Children learn not only from the teacher but also through mutual communication, simple dialogues, games and group activities. If a child needs an individual pace or to catch up on specific school material, private lessons may be more suitable.

How do I know which group my child belongs to?

When choosing a group for a younger child, go by the year they are in at school and their previous experience with English. For older children, language level matters more than age. If you are unsure, write or call us. We will help you find a group that matches your child in level, pace and teaching style.

Is the course also suitable for complete beginners?

Yes, definitely — but it is important for the child to be placed in the right beginner group. With beginners we progress gradually, with emphasis on repetition, understanding, the joy of early successes and overcoming the fear of speaking.

Is the course also suitable for children who already have English at school?

Yes. The course is a good supplement to school English. Children have more opportunity to speak, respond, practise vocabulary and gain the confidence that school lessons often don't leave enough time for.

Do you teach pre-school children?

We do not currently offer group courses for pre-school children. If you are interested in private lessons, please ask us about current options.

How lessons work

How many children are in a group?

In courses at ZŠ V Remízku, the group size is 5–10 children. MINI groups, which take place at Threshold language school, are smaller — a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 children. This gives each child more speaking time.

What does a typical lesson look like?

Lessons are structured to suit the children's age. Short activities, games, songs, pictures, movement, textbook work, revision and simple communication tasks alternate. The aim is for children not to be passive listeners but to use English as much as possible.

Do you use a textbook in the courses?

Yes, depending on age and level we use appropriate textbooks — usually those used at school — supplemented by additional materials, games, pictures, songs and activities. The textbook helps maintain the continuity of the course, but lessons are not based on exercises alone.

Is it possible to focus the course on material covered at school?

Group courses are structured to complement school material and focus mainly on what there is no time for in the classroom — most often speaking. For catching up on and revising school material, the most suitable option is a private closed course for 1–3 pupils, where it is possible to focus on specific material or skills.

Teachers

Who teaches the children?

Courses are led by teachers selected with regard to the age, level and needs of the group. For children's teaching, what matters to us is not only language knowledge but also the ability to work with a children's group, motivate children and create a safe environment for speaking.

Does a Czech or a foreign teacher teach the children?

Each group is led by a specific Czech or international teacher depending on the course focus and the group's needs. For younger or less confident children, a Czech teacher can be an advantage — they can explain tasks sensitively and help children at the start. An international teacher brings more natural contact with English. The goal is to choose leadership that means the child sees English not as stressful but as something they can manage and may even enjoy.

Attendance and organisation

What if my child misses a lesson?

With group courses it is not always possible to make up a missed lesson individually. We can however help parents find out what was covered in the lesson so the child can catch up where possible.

Can a child join a course during the term?

It depends on the specific group, its capacity and level. If there is a place in the group and the course suits the child, joining during the term is possible. Please contact us and we will arrange it individually.

Is it possible that a course might not open?

Yes, a group course opens once the minimum number of students has enrolled. If a particular group did not open, we would, where possible, offer you another group or a suitable alternative, or return the course fee promptly.

What if the group doesn't suit my child?

If it becomes clear during the first lessons that a different group, a different pace or a different type of teaching would suit your child better, we will discuss the situation with you and recommend a more suitable solution based on current availability.

Not sure which group or type of teaching is right?

We'll help you.
